Description

This course will explore the use of mind-altering substances throughout history, across cultures and within subcultures of the United States. From a biochemical, sociological and psychological standpoint we will probe the reasons why people seek to alter their state of being, whether through the use of drugs or through natural means. Readings will include selections such as: The Compass of Pleasure by David Linden; Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experiences by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; and Forces of Habit by David Courtwright. Open to seniors.
