This introductory course is intended for students who want to expand their knowledge of music and become informed listeners. No prior musical training is required. Students will learn to perceive the elements of music - rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, timbre and form and acquire a musical vocabulary to describe what they hear. This course will explore music across boundaries of culture, style and time - classical and popular, Western and non-Western, traditional and experimental, folk and jazz, and consider the influence of technology on the art of music. Course work will include listening assignments, reading, reflections and attendance at concerts.
